A Low Maintenance Option

Fiesta Garden Services have done numerous jobs where the client has requested graveled areas. It can be an expensive option where the raw materials are concerned especially if ornamental gravel is used in large quantities. Most clients like graveled areas in their garden more because it is a low maintenance option. 

When Fiesta Garden Services do any job which involves gravel, our team always put down a barrier membrane to prevent weeds growing through the gravel. Using membrane also has the added bonus of stopping any gravel being mixed in with the ground underneath the gravel whilst allowing water penetration. Before the membrane is put down the ground is always prepared in that it is leveled and raked to remove any stones that may damage the membrane. When the graveled is laid it is always done so that it is at least three centimeters in depth. When finished it is always raked to ensure that the area is covered by gravel evenly and level.

Tip: It is worth remembering that when a large area of ground is covered in gravel, it is always good to break the area up using pots or garden ornaments.

Fiesta Garden Services was contacted by one of its regular clients to gravel an untidy area of the front garden.

The client of this job intended to line the fence with pots to brighten the area up

This was a job taken on by Fiesta garden Services and required six tonnes of 20mm gravel. This had to be moved from the front driveway where it had been delivered to the rear garden where it was needed.

This area of the garden was completely overgrown and had become unsightly.

The bulk of the weeds that were removed initially were pulled up by hand.

Now the bulk of the weeds have been removed, the ground is raked and leveled.

Once the ground has been raked it is then fine raked to help remove any bumps or dips.

Putting down membrane before the gravel prevents the growth of weeds through the gravel. The membrane used also allows water to penetrate through to the soil which prevents the gravel being flooded during heavy rainfall.

To help prevent any damage to the membrane when the gravel is put down, the membrane is rolled out slowly in tandem with the gravel.

When the gravel is put down it’s roughly leveled to help ensure an even thickness.

This part of the garden which is a raised flower bed is almost ready to gravel.

As with the rest of the graveling work in the garden the membrane was put down and the gravel put on top of it.

The raised flower bed and the access pathway to the mobile home are now finished. All that remains is for the client to add their ceramic pots to brighten up the area.

This raised flower bed had runner beans growing in it and ran along the length of the house.

The runner beans and the canes were removed along with all the weeds.

Moving from one end of the flower bed the membrane and gravel is put down.

The flower bed is now graveled and has been leveled using a stiff yard brush.
